Searching for the Versatile Day Dress

By Anonymous on Aug 31, 2012 12:57 pm

Finding an outfit for an evening event is, comparatively, a lot easier than choosing a day dress. Unlike a smart evening event, a daytime social occasion, no matter how formal or where it happens to be, can cause a huge amount of consternation regarding the necessity of dress and the particular protocol that must be followed. Even if you are expressly told that the event is only going to be casual, if it's a work event, then you know that some of your colleagues are likely to make a much bigger effort and leave you looking dowdy. This isn't such a problem if you're in the majority, but what if you're not and become the black sheep of the party? Well, the solution is to find a summer dress that will work for both causal and formal occasions, depending on whether you decide to dress it up or down.

Searching For Shoes

By Anonymous on Aug 31, 2012 11:24 am

When you want to buy the very latest in fashion footwear where can you turn when there is so much out there and it all looks much the same? Going off on a trek to the local shops in town is not always that much fun. You can go walking around and in and out of shops and stores for ages and never really find exactly what you are looking for. It can also be immensely tiring and frustrating having to wait for busy assistants to fetch your shoes and try them on and test the feel in the shop. It is not uncommon to either give up and go home or buy something ludicrously out of step with what you really want and feel dejected.

Perfecting a Smart-Casual Outfit

By Anonymous on Aug 31, 2012 10:21 am

The fine art of perfecting the smart-casual outfit can be difficult to pull off successfully. It's often easy to find an elegant and smart dress, or something laid back for meeting friends, but finding something that works well at a less formal work function, for example, can be tricky. Indeed, many of us dread such social occasions less because they involve the necessity of fatuous banter around a tray of barely defrosted supermarket vol-au-vents and more as a consequence of the necessity of buying an outfit just to fit in. In fact, what even constitutes smart-casual is something of a moveable feast and, quite frankly, nothing leaves you treading water more than a rather nebulous dress code that could quite conceivably incorporate anything from a pair of jeans, to a smart summer blazer and matching skirt.

Unification Church founder Rev. Moon dies at 92

GAPYEONG, South Korea (AP) ? The Rev. Sun Myung Moon was a self-proclaimed messiah who built a global business empire. He called both North Korean leaders and American presidents his friends, but spent time in prisons in both countries. His followers around the world cherished him, while his detractors accused him of brainwashing recruits and extracting money from worshippers.

These contradictions did nothing to stop the founder of the Unification Church from turning his religious vision into a worldwide movement and a multibillion-dollar corporation stretching from the Korean Peninsula to the United States.

Moon died Monday at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong, northeast of Seoul, two weeks after being hospitalized with pneumonia, Unification Church spokesman Ahn Ho-yeul told The Associated Press. Moon's wife and children were at his side, Ahn said. He was 92.

Church officials planned to meet later Monday to discuss mourning and funeral arrangements.

Moon founded his Bible-based religion in Seoul in 1954, a year after the Korean War ended, saying Jesus Christ personally called on him to complete his work.

The church gained fame ? and notoriety ? by marrying thousands of followers in mass ceremonies presided over by Moon himself. The couples often came from different countries and had never met, but were matched up by Moon in a bid to build a multicultural religious world.

Today, the Unification Church claims 3 million followers worldwide, including 100,000 members in the U.S., Ahn said. But ex-members and critics say the figure is actually no more than 100,000 worldwide.

The church's holdings included the Washington Times newspaper; Connecticut's Bridgeport University; the New Yorker Hotel, a midtown Manhattan art deco landmark, and a seafood distribution firm that supplies sushi to Japanese restaurants across the U.S. It acquired a ski resort, a professional football team and other businesses in South Korea. It also operates a foreign-owned luxury hotel in North Korea and jointly operates a fledgling North Korean automaker.

The church has been accused of using devious recruitment tactics and duping followers out of money. Parents of followers in the United States and elsewhere have expressed worries that their children were brainwashed into joining. The church has pointed out that many new religious movements faced similar accusations in their early years. Moon's followers were often called "Moonies," a term many found pejorative.

Born in 1920 in a rural part of what is today North Korea, Moon said he was 16 when Jesus Christ first appeared to him and told him to finish the work he had begun on Earth 2,000 years earlier. Moon, who tried to preach the gospel in the North, was imprisoned there in the late 1940s for alleged spying for South Korea; he disputed the charge.

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he fled to South Korea. After divorcing his first wife, he married Hak Ja Han Moon in 1960. They have 10 surviving sons and daughters, according to the church.

In South Korea, Moon quickly drew young acolytes to his conservative, family-oriented value system and unusual interpretation of the Bible. He conducted his first mass wedding in Seoul in the early 1960s, and the "blessing ceremonies" grew in scale over the years. A 1982 wedding at New York's Madison Square Garden ? the first outside South Korea ? drew thousands of participants.

"International and intercultural marriages are the quickest way to bring about an ideal world of peace," Moon said in a 2009 autobiography. "People should marry across national and cultural boundaries with people from countries they consider to be their enemies so that the world of peace can come that much more quickly."

Moon began building a relationship with North Korea in 1991, even meeting with the country's founder, Kim Il Sung, in the eastern North Korean port city of Hamhung. In his autobiography, Moon said he urged Kim to give up his nuclear ambitions, and that Kim responded by saying that his atomic program was for peaceful purposes and he had no intention to use it to "kill my own people."

"The two of us were able to communicate well about our shared hobbies of hunting and fishing," Moon wrote. "At one point, we each felt we had so much to say to the other that we just started talking like old friends meeting after a long separation."

When Kim died in 1994, Moon sent a condolence delegation to North Korea, drawing criticism from conservatives at home. The late Kim Jong Il, who succeeded his father as North Korean leader, sent roses, prized wild ginseng, Rolex watches and other gifts to Moon on his birthday each year. Moon said Kim Il Sung had instructed Kim Jong Il that "after I die, if there are things to discuss pertaining to North-South relations, you must always seek the advice of President Moon."

The church also sent a delegation to pay its respects after Kim Jong Il died in December and was succeeded by his son Kim Jong Un.

Moon sought and eventually developed a good relationship with conservative American leaders such as former Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Yet he also served 13 months at a U.S. federal prison in the mid-1980s after a New York City jury convicted him of filing false tax returns. Moon was defended in that case by Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor and one of the foremost experts on constitutional law.

The church says the U.S. government persecuted Moon because of his growing influence and popularity with young Americans.

In later years, the church adopted a lower profile in the United States and focused on building up its businesses. Moon lived for more than 30 years in the United States, the church said.

As he grew older, Moon also handed over day-to-day control of his empire to his children. His U.S.-born youngest son, the Rev. Hyung-jin Moon, was named the church's top religious director in April 2008. Other children run the church's businesses and charitable activities in South Korea and abroad.

In 2009, Moon married 45,000 people in simultaneous ceremonies worldwide in his first large-scale mass wedding in years, the church said. Some were newlyweds and others reaffirmed past vows. He married an additional 7,000 couples in South Korea in February 2010. The ceremonies attracted media coverage but little of the controversy that dogged the church in earlier decades.

The church's acquisitions include dozens of companies ranging from hospitals and universities to a professional soccer team in Brazil and a ballet troupe. Hyung-jin Moon told The Associated Press in February 2010 that his father's offspring do not see themselves as his successors.

"Our role is not inheriting that messianic role," he said. "Our role is more of the apostles ... where we become the bridge between understanding what kind of lives (our) two parents have lived."

Walmart tests iPhone 'Scan & Go' feature

Wal-Mart Stores Inc is testing a "Scan & Go" system that would allow shoppers to scan items using their iPhones and then pay at a self-checkout counter, a move that could trim checkout times and slash costs for retailers.

If the test by the world's largest retailer is successful, it has the potential to change the way people shop and pay, making the process more personal and potentially faster.

Earlier this week, Walmart invited employees with Apple Inc iPhones to participate in a test at a Walmart supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas, near the company's headquarters, according to a form on the Survey Monkey website. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/selfcheckout)

"All of the effort is to speed your way through the checkout so that we can reduce costs and improve the shopping experience," said Paul Weitzel, managing partner at retail consulting firm Willard Bishop, who said he had not seen Wal-Mart's test. "With smartphones and improved technology we're only going to see more of this."

The test comes months after Wal-Mart said that it would add more self-checkout lanes at its Walmart and Sam's Club stores as it continues to look for ways to lower costs and prices for its shoppers.

Pushing more shoppers to scan their own items and make payments without the help of a cashier could save Wal-Mart millions of dollars, Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley said on March 7. For every 1 second in average transaction time at the Walmart U.S. chain, the company has said that it spends about $12 million in cashier wages.

Shoppers often complain on Twitter and in other forums that it takes too long to pay at Walmart, where sometimes only a few of the several checkout lanes are open and staffed with cashiers. While some retailers employ baggers to speed up the checkout process, at Walmart one employee scans and bags items.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," said Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar.

Walmart's current iPhone app already includes functions such as letting shoppers create lists and seeing which items are in stock.

The test comes as retailers and restaurants are trying to figure out ways to speed up the checkout process by letting customers pay with a tap of their smartphones.

In the Walmart iPhone scanning test, shoppers can scan products with their phone and put them in bags while they shop, and then pay at a self-checkout counter.

The test does not allow users to pay on their phone. The app transfers the scanned items to the self-checkout kiosk and then shoppers complete the transaction using the normal self-checkout process.

Wal-Mart earlier this month said it was joining with other retailers to develop a mobile payment network, a retailer-led initiative that would match similar services by Google Inc

and eBay Inc, among others. While self-checkout aisles are common at many stores, the ability to scan items with one's mobile phone while shopping is not a typical process. Among other tests, Supervalu Inc's

Jewel-Osco chain once let shoppers use handheld scanners and then enter that information at the checkout to pay, but that test ended years ago.

"This is probably the fourth technology that we've tried between shopping carts, RFID chips, the handheld scanners and now we've got smartphones," Weitzel said of the retail industry. "We're looking for ways to improve that experience as an industry."

Wal-Mart's test appears to be limited to one store, but it appears that the company sought out participants beyond its staff for its study. The company asked employees to reach out to friends and family in its search for participants, according to a copy of an email sent by the company's @WalmartLabs team and obtained by Reuters. A company spokesman would not verify this on Friday afternoon.

Wal-Mart offered participants in one-hour sessions $100 for their time and a $25 gift card to use in the store for purchases, according to the form on the Survey Monkey website.

Calif. legislature OKs pension changes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? The state Legislature on Friday approved a package of changes to California's public employee pension system that is expected to save taxpayers billions of dollars, even as Republican lawmakers said much more needs to be done to fix a system with massive liabilities.

The main pension bill, AB340, passed 49-8 in the Assembly and 38-1 in the state Senate. Gov. Jerry Brown negotiated the reforms with the Legislature's Democratic leadership.

The legislation will increase the retirement age for new employees, cap the annual payout $132,000, eliminate numerous abuses of the system and require workers who are not contributing half of their retirement costs to pay more.

Brown said he supports the legislation even though it falls short of the 12-point reform proposal he offered last October.

"This is the most far-reaching pension reform in the history of California," he told reporters before the final legislative vote.

He said the package was a difficult compromise with many "contentious parties."

Lawmakers voted even as companion legislation was hustled up to make key fixes in the hastily written bill, which was taken up on the final day of the legislative session.

Some Republican lawmakers complained the process was rushed and preferred to delay a vote until the drafting mistakes were fixed. But several GOP lawmakers voted for it while saying the Legislature also needs to do much more to address an unfunded public pension liability of nearly $165 billion.

"What we have before us is not pension reform, but a pension change," said Sen. Mimi Walters, a Republican from the Orange County community of Lake Forest. "While I will support this measure today, it is my hope that our vote today will be the beginning of achieving real reform and taking on the challenge of our unfunded pension liability."

She and other Republicans also noted that none of the changes was enshrined in the state constitution, meaning they can be changed by a majority vote of a future legislature.

Brown announced the pension package this week, 10 months after he released a more comprehensive reform proposal that would have gone much further than the approach approved Friday.

Underlying the negotiations was staunch opposition from public employee labor unions who are supporting Brown's November ballot proposal to temporarily raise sales taxes and taxes on high-income earners.

While some union leaders expressed dismay over the final bill, Democrats appeased their labor allies by removing some of the most important elements of Brown's original proposal, such as instituting a hybrid pension plan that would have included a 401(k)-style savings vehicle.

Assemblyman Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber, said the bill was an example of "the Legislature at its worst: Last-minute scrambling around on a major, major issue."

"The governor can sign it and say, 'We did pension reform. Hooray! Now support the tax increase.' I think this only gives more reason to say no to the tax increase, that the Legislature that spends their money proceeds in this kind of manner," Nielsen said.

Actuaries estimate the changes would save up to $55 billion over 30 years, which is just a third of the state's estimated unfunded pension liability. Some pension experts believe the overall liability is even greater.

Some Democratic lawmakers closely aligned with labor opposed the legislation, saying it could be the first step toward rolling back collective bargaining rights.

"This is a slippery slope," said Assemblyman Sandre Swanson, D-Alameda, who opposed the bill.

Brown rejected those arguments, noting that some of the provisions that greatly expanded public employee pensions also were done through the legislative process.

Still, the package fell short of Brown's original proposal. In addition to the lack of a 401(k)-style plan that would make public employees bear some of the investment risk, as private-sector workers do, nothing was done to reduce skyrocketing retiree health care costs.

And the union-dominated board that oversees operations of the California Public Employees' Retirement System, the nation's largest public pension fund, will not face reforms or independent oversight of its decisions, as Brown had sought.

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, who negotiated the deal with Brown, took issue with lawmakers who characterized the changes as a small or modest step.

The Sacramento Democrat noted that both labor unions and pension-reform advocates criticized the deal, but said surveys show the majority of Californians do not want to eliminate defined-benefit pensions for government workers.

"As this debate has gone on, I, for one, am tired of public employees being the sole and, I think, unfair focus of the state's problems," Steinberg told his colleagues on the Senate floor. "People who enter the public service are public servants, and you have great public employees, mediocre, and the rest, just like you have in the private sector."
