Would You Ride This Weird Foot-Powered Bike Thing in Public? [Video]

"Ride" might not even be the right verb here, because the "rider" is strapped in and sort of hangs from the frame. In any case, this contraption, called the Fliz Bike, is a prototype intended to make biking more maneuverable for urban environments. It may succeed at that, but it just looks weird, partly in a cool way, partly in a doofy one. More »

A series of earthquakes rattle California

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A series of earthquakes has rattled California, from rural Imperial County all the way to the San Diego County coast.

Paul Caruso with the U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake, magnitude 3.9, struck at 10:02 a.m. Sunday about three miles north-northwest of Brawley.

It was followed by a 3.4 quake about 90 seconds later in the same area near the southern end of the Salton Sea about 16 miles north of El Centro. Magnitude 2.2 and 2.0 quakes followed minutes later.

Preliminary USGS reports indicated that three quakes larger than magnitude 5.3 struck within two minutes starting at 12:30 p.m. Caruso says the magnitude of those quakes have not been verified.

A sheriff's dispatcher says there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

(AP) ? Authorities were searching Friday for a gunman who shot and killed an organized crime boss clad in a swimsuit as he walked from a beach to join his family in a hotel in Terracina, a resort town south of Rome.

Gaetano Marino ? a boss from the Neapolitan Camorra ? was hit by at least four shots to the head and another five or six to his back Thursday afternoon as he left the beach en route to his hotel in Terracina, 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Rome in Lazio region. His family had gone ahead of him back to the hotel, police said.

The shooting caused panic along the crowded beach, and witnesses told police the gunman fled the scene in a small gray car driven by a second man.

Marino, 48, headed the Scissionisti , or "secessionists" clan, which had fought a bloody turf war in the streets of Naples for years with the rival Di Lauro clan over control of drug trafficking. His killing was being investigated as a hit by rivals, either inside or out of his own clan.

Marino was known by the nickname "Moncherino," or stump, after he lost both hands in an explosion while planting a bomb in the 1990s. He stirred public outrage by appearing in the front row of a state TV audience this year while his 12-year-old daughter dedicated a song to him.

The Camorra in recent decades has been pushing up from Naples into Lazio, whose capital is Rome.

Make Canning Jar Lids and Accessories with a 3D Printer [3dPrinting]

Make Canning Jar Lids and Accessories with a 3D PrinterFor many people it would be difficult to find two things that have less in common than mason jars and 3D printers, but many makers and homesteaders with one foot in the past and one in the future find high-tech methods to practice off-grid lifestyles.

3D Printing enthusiast shop and weblog Proto Paradigm offers many free designs (things) for use with mason jars at Thingiverse, a depository of free 3D printer designs, including regular and wide mouth canning jar lids, coin bank lids, a fly trap, a lid for sprouting, a straining lid, and a fermentation lid.

If you don't have a 3D printer of your own you can try to find a local hackerspace or college lab who might be willing to let you use their 3D printer for a small fee. Keep in mind that the plastic lids are not suitable for long term canning but they are great for anything you want to keep in your refrigerator.

Fisker confirms Q&A outlining Karma woes and fixes, may establish council to talk issues in person

Fisker Karma mountain drive

Fisker has had more than its fair share of teething troubles with the Karma, but it has to be given credit for going out of its way to listen to early adopters. The hybrid car builder has confirmed to Autoblog that a question and answer session making the rounds is the official result of town hall discussions that have both acknowledged problems and promised fixes where they're possible. The answers we've been given are a mix of sober realities and practical remedies. Drivers hoping for outright hardware upgrades to improve performance with existing Karmas will have to keep wishing; thankfully, a host of firmware fixes are on the way to improve at least the sedan's Command Center system and mirrors. PR lead Roger Ormisher even hints that there could be an in-person council that would tackle concerns more directly than the remote pep talks. We're mostly hoping for the day when Fisker stamps out the bugs and doesn't need the Q&A to put Karma owners' minds at ease.
