Russia: Assad foes must come to Syria meeting without conditions

The battle between BlackBerry and Microsoft for the No.3 spot in the smartphone platform war is showing no signs of slowing, but a new contender will soon come to market to challenge these struggling giants. Jolla, whose CEO spoke with us nearly a year ago about the company?s efforts, has unveiled its first smartphone. Named simply ?Jolla,? the handset will feature a 4.5-inch HD display, a dual-core processor, 4G LTE, 16GB of internal storage, microSD support, an 8-megapixel camera, Android app support and the Sailfish mobile operating system. Most impressively of all, perhaps, is the price tag: just??399 before taxes and subsidies. Jolla says it hopes to begin shipping the phone by the end of 2013, and a video of

CON: Families find peace in honoring final wishes - Victoria Advocate

Originally published May 19, 2013 at 11:00 P.M., updated May 19, 2013 at 11:42 P.M.

Alzheimer's disease slowly robbed Hilaria Adame of her most prized possessions - her memories.

Death was inevitable as the affliction progressed, so Adame, then in her 70s, took control of her own mortality, asking that she not be resuscitated and that she not go through invasive treatment to keep her alive.

She wanted to go in peace.

Adame died in March at 81, and though her death was difficult for family, her 54-year-old daughter, Esther Castillo, said she understood her mother's wishes.

That's how it should be, Castillo said.

"I did not question it," she said. "I felt this is her life, and this is how she wanted to deal with it. It was her choice to do it that way, and I wanted to honor her wish."

The pending Senate Bill 303 would give families a longer timeframe to challenge a doctor's orders - 21 days - instead of one week. A revision of the bill added it would require water and nutrition be provided to patients as long as the family wanted, and it also would stop doctors from issuing do-not-resuscitate orders.

This means patients with advanced directives, or living wills, would have the most power.

A law like that would put more families at ease, Castillo said.

"We should not leave it up to the doctors to make all the decisions," she said. "It depends on the circumstances because there have been instances when doctors have made medical decisions that were unnecessary or harmful medical decisions."

Castillo's mother made the decision to sign do-not-resuscitate paperwork after her husband, Antonio Adame, died of cancer in 2006.

Patients like Adame aren't the only ones taking matters into their own hands.

Karl Craigie lived with dementia and died at 83 in his home, leaving his widow, Phyllis Craigie, at ease with his final moment.

"Karl and I had discussed end-of-life and what should be done," she said. "There shouldn't have been any surprises."

Arlo Weltge, a Houston emergency room physician, said end-of-life discussions are difficult for families and doctors.

Weltge said doctors try to provide an appropriate level of care, which is based on the respecting the deicsions of the patient, family and doctor.

"When it comes to end-of-life (care), our goal is to see the patient's wishes are followed," Weltge said.

Craigie knows her husband living his last days comfortably is what he wanted, but she knows others may want their end-of-life care to be different.

But one thing remains clear - the families should have that final say, she added.

"It is not a small job to take care of a person who is dying," Craigie said. "You want to do everything you possibly can."

Advocate reporter J.R. Ortega contributed to this story.

Mechanism linking key inflammatory marker to cancer identified

May 20, 2013 ? In a new study described in the journal Oncogene, researchers reveal how a key player in cell growth, immunity and the inflammatory response can be transformed into a primary contributor to tumor growth.

Scientists call this Jekyll-and-Hyde molecule NF-kappa B. In healthy cells, it is a powerful "first responder," a vital part of the body's immune and inflammatory responses. It spends most of its life in the cell's cytoplasm, quietly awaiting orders. But when extracellular signals -- of a viral or bacterial invasion, for example -- set off chemical alarms, the cell unchains this warhorse, allowing it to go into the nucleus where it spurs a flurry of defensive activity, including the transcription of genes that trigger inflammation, promote cell proliferation and undermine cell death.

Researchers have known for years that a hyperactive form of NF-kappa B that gets into the nucleus and stays there is associated with various cancers. But they didn't know what was keeping it active in the nucleus.

"Normally in the cell NF-kappa B is in the cytosol, it's not in the nucleus, and it's not activated," said University of Illinois medical biochemistry professor Lin-Feng Chen, who led the new study. "You have to stimulate normal cells to see NF-kappa B in the nucleus. But in cancer cells without any stimulation you can see this nuclear form of NF-kappa B. The cell just won't die because of this. That is why NF-kappa B is so important in cancer."

In the new study, Chen's group found that another molecule known to help regulate gene expression, called BRD4, recognizes a specific amino acid on a subunit of the NF-kappa B protein complex after the amino acid has been marked with a specific tag, called an acetyl group. This "acetylation" allows the BRD4 to bind to NF-kappa B, activating it and preventing its degradation in cancer cells.

Previous studies had shown that BRD4's recognition of the acetylated subunit increased NF-kappa B activation, but this recognition had not been linked to cancer.

BRD4 belongs to a class of molecules that can recognize chemical markers on other proteins and interact with them to spur the marked proteins to perform new tasks. Chemical "readers" such as BRD4 are important players in the field of epigenetics, which focuses on how specific genes are regulated.

"In epigenetics, there are writers, there are readers and there are erasers," Chen said. The writers make modifications to proteins after they are formed, without changing the underlying sequence of the gene that codes for them. These modifications (such as acetylation) signal other molecules (the readers) to engage with the marked proteins in various ways, allowing the proteins to fulfill new roles in the life of the cell. Epigenetic erasers remove the marks when they are no longer of use.

Such protein modifications "have been shown to be critically involved in transcription regulation and cancer development," the researchers report.

To test whether BRD4 was contributing to the sustained presence of NF-kappa B in the nucleus of cancer cells, Chen and his colleagues exposed lung cancer cells in cell culture and in immune-deficient mice to JQ1, a drug that interferes with BRD4 activity. Exposure to JQ1 blocked the interaction of BRD4 and NF-kappa B, blocked the expression of genes regulated by NF-kappa B, reduced proliferation of lung cancer cells and suppressed the ability of lung cancer cells to induce tumors in immune-deficient mice, the researchers found.

The researchers also discovered that depletion of BRD4 or the treatment of cells with JQ1 induced the degradation of the NF-kappa B subunit recognized by BRD4.

Chen said that BRD4 likely prevents other molecules from recognizing the hyperactive NF-kappa B in the nucleus and marking it for degradation.

"This is an example of how epigenetic regulators and NF-kappa B may one day be targeted for the treatment of cancer," he said.

Researchers from Illinois biochemistry professor Satish Nair's laboratory and from the laboratory of James Bradner at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute contributed to this study.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

If Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano ever gets tired of having to tell people Josh Freeman is his starting quarterback, someone should probably mention to him that it?s kind of his own fault.

Schiano started singing like Tammy Wynette again in relation to Freeman Monday, the day after he was quoted as saying he was ?not against? the notion of starting rookie Mike Glennon instead.

?We have a starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman,? Schiano said, via Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.

According to the report, Schiano said he?s trying to be honest, and doesn?t mean to put pressure on Freeman by saying such things in the national media.

?I guess nationally, they don?t sit here with me every day like you guys [local media] do,? Schiano said. ?From the day we arrived, our whole program has [been based on] competition, . . . That?s what we believe in. It?s the most competitive sports league in the world. It?s competition, and I love it.

?But we have our starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman. I?m not looking to find another.?

If he really wanted to clear things up, he could always, you know, stop leaving the door open a crack every time he talks about Glennon.

Or, if he wanted a stronger statement on Freeman and how much he loves him under center, he could give him a new contract to replace the final year of his rookie deal.

But it doesn?t appear at the moment that Schiano intends to do either.

And that?s fine, as long as everyone?s clear about the implication sent by those actions.

He likes Freeman, right up until the point he decides he doesn?t.

So Schiano?s apparently going to have to keep clarifying all the things that he keeps saying, whether to the national or local media.

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

(AP) ? The Bruins know a huge deficit can disappear quickly. They overcame one to reach the second round of the playoffs.

So they weren't about to ease up when they had a big lead of their own on Sunday.

Boston went ahead by two goals in the first minute of the third period, added another 12 minutes later and beat the New York Rangers 5-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

Just six days earlier, the Bruins became the first team to win a Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period. They started their comeback with less than 11 minutes left and extended their season with a 5-4 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"Guys are really trying to stay focused on doing their job in the third period," Brad Marchand said. "We know how important they are, especially after what we went through being down by a few goals. We know that it's possible for any team to come back from any score."

Marchand made it 4-2 with just 26 seconds gone in the third period, Milan Lucic scored at 12:39 and the Bruins worked hard the rest of the way.

"We talked about it before we went out there in the third period, and we just had to make sure that we played to win," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "I don't like our team when we play on our heels and we're just trying to protect a one-goal lead. We've got to extend the lead and extend it even more before we even think about protecting it."

Game 3 is Tuesday night in New York.

The Rangers never led Sunday, although they tied the game quickly after each of the Bruins' first two goals.

The second period may have been New York's best of the series even though Johnny Boychuk's tie-breaking goal on a 40-foot shot at 12:08 of the period got past goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who was screened by several players.

"We played a really good second," New York's Dan Girardi said. "The first shift of the third killed us."

That's when Marchand made it 4-2 with a goal similar to the one that gave the Bruins a 3-2 overtime win in the opener.

Patrice Bergeron carried the puck in deep along the right side and passed across the crease to Marchand, who had beaten Girardi and tipped it in.

"I have to be ready to defend that pass there," Girardi said. "They didn't have much room, but, obviously, I have to be either on the strong side blocking that or on Marchand's stick. That really put us behind the eight-ball."

With a two-goal lead, the Bruins remained aggressive but still clogged the middle in front of goalie Tuukka Rask when the Rangers attacked.

"We felt really good going into the third, and to have that type of goal go in ? it's just two-on-two ? it hurts you," Rangers coach John Tortorella said. "We couldn't generate anything, and then they're just going to fill the middle and they're just going to jam you."

Boston never trailed as rookie Torey Krug scored the first goal at 5:28 of the first period before Rangers captain Ryan Callahan tied it less than three minutes later. Gregory Campbell made it 2-1 at 2:24 of the second period, and New York pulled even again 56 seconds later on Rick Nash's goal, his first of the playoffs after he led the Rangers with 21 in the regular season.

"We didn't play our best," Marchand said. "I think, especially in the second period, they took it to us, but we were able to bounce back. It's definitely a very even series."

Not when it comes to goaltending.

Lundqvist allowed more than five goals for the first time in 152 games, including the postseason, and stopped 27 shots.

"I thought I was in position, but (there were) a couple screens and when you give up five goals you can't be satisfied," he said.

There's also the matter of his left shoulder that was hit by Daniel Paille's third-period shot. Lundqvist rubbed it after the game and said, "We'll take a look at it."

Rask saved 35 of 37 shots.

Still, Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy last year and is a finalist for it this year.

"I know that I can't let in any lead goals most nights because he is who he is," Rask said, "but, then again it's a team game and we're more focused on the Rangers than any individual."

These are the Rangers who also lost the first two games of their opening series on the road, then won the next two at home. They lost Game 5 in Washington but won the last two games behind shutouts by Lundqvist.

"We've done it before," he said, "but I think we are playing a better team now so it's going to be tough to do it."

Ahead or behind, home or away, the Bruins plan to play with the same determination the entire game.

"You can't take anything for granted," Boychuk said. "It's playoffs. Anything can happen, and sometimes a team can play better in front of their hometown."

NOTES: The last time Lundqvist allowed more than four goals was March 9, 2011, in a 5-2 loss to Anaheim. In the next 151 games he allowed four goals just 13 times. ... The Bruins played their second straight game without injured veteran defensemen Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden ... A defenseman got a goal or an assist on each of Boston's goals. ... The margin of victory was more than two for just the second time in 26 games between the teams. ... In their nine playoff games, the Rangers have scored on two of 35 power plays. They're 0 for 7 against the Bruins.

WordPress CEO claims 72,000 blogs defected from Tumblr after Yahoo acquisition news

WordPress CEO sees 72,000 blogs imported from Tumblr after Yahoo rumor breaks

WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg has spoken out in an attempt to capitalize on Yahoo's rumored $1.1 billion acquisition of rival blogging service Tumblr. He claims that once the news broke on Sunday, defections from Tumblr to his own site rose from 400 to 600 per hour to over 72,000 -- which presumably included users put off by Yahoo's track record of shutting down its acquisitions (like Del.icio.us, Geocities and Broadcast.com). If that figure is true, then Marissa Mayer's probably going to have to answer some rather awkward questions in a few hours.

Start Your Day Right With a Daft Punk Laser Bubble Party

Lasers, bubbles, edge-tracking, and Daft Punk are all pretty awesome in their own separate ways, but put together, they can put one one hell of a useless, random, but awesome show.

Messing with his Etherdream DAC laser to no end other than real craziness, Memo Akten of the group Marshmallow Laser Feast whipped up this rockin' little laser party. The rig uses edge-finding to spot different bubbles and then blast the hell out of them with laser light, which makes for a surprisingly mesmerizing effect.

Memo has a history of creating cool movement-tracking laser-party projects, but this is definitely a high point. I mean, how can you top this without help from another Daft Punk single? [CreativeApplications]

Dems' Senate campaigns marked by internal battles

ATLANTA (AP) ? Republicans aren't the only ones roiled by internal jostling and recruiting hiccups ahead of next year's midterm elections.

Two top-tier Democratic prospects recently bypassed running for Senate seats in Georgia and South Dakota, highlighting both divisions within the party and its challenge of finding candidates whose ideologies line up with voters in Republican-leaning states.

Democrats say they'll be fine even though Rep. John Barrow in Georgia and former Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin in South Dakota declined to seek seats left open by retirements. Both are moderate-to-conservative Democrats whose views would seemingly play well in their states, giving the party a chance to win on GOP turf as Democrats look to hang onto power in the Senate. But without them running, Democrats probably will be forced to back more liberal, less-tested nominees who would likely have tougher races.

The circumstances underscore a particular challenge for Democrats: They have a six-seat cushion, counting Vice President Joe Biden's ability to cast tie-breaking votes. That requires Republicans to nearly sweep the most competitive races to gain enough seats for control. But many of the contests are in states where President Barack Obama never won and remains unpopular.

Another hurdle for Democrats: Midterm electorates are generally older, whiter and more Republican than in presidential years.

Georgia Democrats are hoping to recruit Michelle Nunn, daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn and a nonprofit executive in Atlanta. She's expected to announce a decision soon in the race to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

In the contest for retiring Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson's South Dakota seat, Democrats' preferred candidate now appears to be Rick Weiland, once a top aide to former Sen. Tom Daschle and twice an unsuccessful candidate for Congress. Weiland launched his bid, with Daschle's backing, amid clamoring about Herseth-Sandlin and Johnson's son, Brendan, a U.S. attorney. State Democrats now say the younger Johnson likely won't run.

"It's a recipe for a challenging campaign," said Steve Dick, a former Daschle aide. "It's a tough race, without a doubt. And it's getting more difficult. We're a red state. We just don't have these opportunities that often."

South Dakota is one of three states where a Democratic senator is retiring in a state Obama lost last November; the others are Montana and West Virginia. There also are Democratic retirements in the swing-voting states of Iowa and Michigan, which Obama won.

Republicans also are aiming at four Democratic incumbents in states Republican Mitt Romney won: Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Georgia, which went for Romney by 8 percentage points over Obama, has one of two GOP seats opened by retirements; the other is in Nebraska, a virtual lock for Republicans.

Democrats say they can challenge Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky, but they haven't yet recruited a top-tier candidate even though the Republican is unpopular at home.

At the National Republican Senatorial Committee, spokesman Brad Dayspring mocked Democrats for failing at a strategy he says was clear: Get conservative Democrats in Republican-leaning states. But Justin Barasky, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, dismissed the notion of an internal Democratic struggle or recruiting woes, and pointed to divisive primaries shaping up for Republicans in several states.

Clearly, Democrats are left with a tricky balance as they look for candidates with this criteria: Satisfy core Democratic voters, ensure successful fundraising and reach independents who voted for Romney and, before him, John McCain and George W. Bush.

Some Democrats thought Barrow and Herseth-Sandlin satisfied those standards.

Barrow is the Deep South's last white Democrat in the House, and he's beaten well-financed GOP nominees in a House district drawn to ensure his defeat. He's a gun owner who voted against the 2010 health care overhaul and voted to hold Obama's attorney general, Eric Holder, in contempt of Congress. He supported the so-called fiscal cliff deal between Obama and congressional Republicans, and successfully wooed thousands of Romney supporters in his last campaign.

But the way Barrow keeps his job could explain why he abandoned the possibility of a promotion.

"His profile is more appropriate to his congressional district than to a statewide run, particularly for metro Atlanta, where most of the votes are in the progressive base," said state Sen. Vincent Fort, a Democrat from the city.

Some Democrats had feared that Barrow would have drawn a primary opponent, and both national and state Democrats concede that the party's best chance for a Georgia upset is to avoid a divisive primary, while leaving a crowded GOP field to spend money and throw punches.

Fort said Nunn would be a compelling candidate. And Democrats, eager to dispute the notion that losing Barrow is a disappointment, point to polling commissioned by Senate Democrats that suggests Nunn would be the better candidate in a general election.

Former Rep. George "Buddy" Darden said Nunn's lack of experience could be an asset. She doesn't have a record to parse and can run as an outsider, he said, a particular upside if Republicans nominate one of the three sitting congressmen who are running.

GOP Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston are joined by Karen Handel, a former executive with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the breast cancer organization, in a race that could draw additional, well-financed candidates. Georgia is just one of several states where Republicans face the prospect of divisive primaries.

In South Dakota, Herseth-Sandlin had been seen by national Democrats as a top-tier prospect because her profile fit the state, and they were aggressively courting her behind the scenes. The 42-year-old Sioux Falls lawyer was taking steps toward running, hoping to avoid a divisive primary in which her opposition to the health care bill in 2010 and support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in 2004 would be used against her.

Weiland, meanwhile, quickly entered the race, in part to keep Herseth-Sandlin out, a sign of tension between the moderate and liberal wings. Weiland, who lost to Herseth-Sandlin in the 2004 House primary, is a close Daschle ally.

Brendan Johnson, also a Daschle ally, would not challenge Weiland, especially in a state where successful Democrats are rare and clubby. However, Weiland, while a seasoned party operative, would likely bow out, should the younger Johnson assess the race over the summer and decide to enter in the fall.

That scenario becomes more probable should the race for the Republican nomination become contested, South Dakota Democrats said.

Former Gov. Mike Rounds is running and his fellow Republicans view him as a solid candidate. Yet popular GOP newcomer Kristi Noem, elected to the House in 2010, hasn't ruled out a candidacy. She's popular with the tea party and is seen as a better fundraiser than Rounds.

Gaining Natural Health with Dieting and Smart Decisions ? Hot ...

It?s a pretty good bet that everybody wants to be healthy and to look good. For some reason, however, this is where things part ways because not everybody is able to reach natural health through dieting. We are not here to try and figure out the reasons for that.

All any person can do is try to educate people about what is available and what can be done. Your job, then, is to find the absolute best information possible and put it to good use. So, as you can see, everybody has a responsibility, and actually we all choose our path.

You have to ask yourself what makes for regular eating in your diet. You can make plenty of progress on your own just by cutting out the food and beverages that isn?t healthy. If you drink a lot of soft drinks and eat fast foods a lot, then you know what to do about that. If that is regular eating for you, then you must change that. But if you want it to work, it?s important to approach it gradually?you can still have things like that every once in a while, after all. It?s important that, if nothing else, you just don?t eat them every single day?it can be a big accomplishment by yourself. If your budget is tight, you need to learn what you can do that doesn?t cost all that much but is still healthy.

Should you eat saturated fats or not, has been talked to death. But the truth of the matter is your body needs a certain amount of saturated fat. This is not a green light to overdo them, at the same time. You need to embrace the principle of common sense, along with eating right and natural health will be the result. In the opinion of some, a number of organizations and people are too extreme with their thinking on saturated fats, and it is unhealthy to severely limit them. A lot will depend on your physical condition at the present time, along with how healthy you are.

Figuring out how to find true and natural health through dieting is definitely something that you can do and it doesn?t even need to take very much time to do it. The element of time is important here because you probably understand more than you think you do. And what you don?t already know, like which foods are natural fat burners during the digestive process, you can learn.

How To Protect Your Self from Falsehoods in Health and Fitness ...

Should you personally own a health and fitness center you should learn how to debunk all of the fitness misconceptions to obtain new business. Additionally be sure to have a great fitness center business plan in your own overall schedule for you to spread out. Everybody wants to improve the state of their health and well being. Combine these folks with eager health product creators and you have a never-ending cycle.

Marketing takes on many forms, and the unethical businesses sometimes use various myths about fitness and health. Nobody wants to be scammed, and this is quite preventable by digging deep and debunking the myths on your own. The balance of this article goes in depth about some of the those areas that are used or presented in a fraudulent manner.

Not everybody wants to be huge when it comes to muscles, and so the myth is simply to lift less. So if you want to stay smaller, just do more repetitions using lighter weights and in this way you will spare yourself from getting big.

The truth about women is they are unable to become as big as men, and this is directly due to hormones within the body. There are so many excellent websites that will give you all the information you need to lift and gain weight.

Some falsehoods are about what is possible or not with ideas like isolating certain parts of the body for development or other activities. It is just that people are operating with incorrect information when it concerns weight loss.

What is needed is a comprehensive approach that makes your body lose fat all over and that is where most people drop the ball. So you???re basically just puffing up the fat and you won???t look any better; so to really tone an area of your body you have to work your entire body or nothing will ever improve.

You may find it ultimately to be not true that weight loss efforts will be smoother and more effective by getting rid of gluten in your diet. Hey ? if you want to really know the secret about becoming a slim person ? eat healthy, in moderation, get exercise ? easy. But some people have a negative reaction to gluten, and it is also some kind of stupid trend to be allergic to everything under the sun, too.

If you can safely eat gluten, then forget about it as it concerns losing excess weight. Then of course we have to tell you to consult with your doctor, and that is fine if you are really not sure. While it is a great idea to read about current and past events, you have to keep things in perspective. Some things, though, are just false. There is so much information available that you will never be able to consume all of it. Just be sure you are not quick to believe the multitude of claims about anything. one muscle up

Shocking, deadly 'Grey's Anatomy' season finale

Bailey and Callie face frightening situations in the dark halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Shonda Rhimes recently promised "Grey's Anatomy" fans that they'd need to "hug a friend" to the weather the storm during Thursday's season finale, and the show's creator was not lying.

With a perfect storm outside and no power inside, it was one fright after another in the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Oh, baby!
First, Meredith went into labor and required a C-section -- by flashlight. But no sooner was baby Bailey born than he was whisked away to NICU with Daddy McDreamy. Just one problem: Dr. Grey was still on the table, bleeding out in the dark.

"Meredith Grey has survived a bomb, a drowning, a gunman and a plane crash -- and she's still here," Cristina reminded Derek once they learned of her condition. "She's going to die when she's like 90, old and warm in her bed. She's not going to die today."

Well, thanks to quick-acting, grown-up Bailey, Cristina was right about that last part. (Whew!)

RIP, relationships
Meredith survived, but the love connection between Callie and Arizona? Not so much. Callie realized that Arizona was finding comfort in the arms of Lauren, and Arizona lashed out. It seems her decision to stray didn't have anything to do with arms, but it had everything to do with a leg -- or the lack of a leg.

Looks like that partnership is as dead as Owen and Cristina's. (Yeah, that happened too.)

Noooooooooooo!
There are worse deaths -- like the one that seemed to befall one beloved character.

In an effort to restore the power, Dr. Webber went down to fix the electrical situation with a simple flip of a switch. Unfortunately, electricity and the puddle Richard was standing in just didn't mix. He was last seen lying very still, eyes closed, wrapped in smoldering clothes.

Of course, no one was around to call the time of death, so there's still hope. (Right?!)

The World's Fastest Wi-Fi Puts Your Sluggish Router to Shame

For the most part, we're all happy if we can get Internet that's fast enough to stream some HD video. But faster is always better, and a new, world-record setting network developed in Germany is so blazing fast you wouldn't know what to do with it. It can deliver multiple HD films in a second.

Hangouts Easter Eggs put dinos and ponies in your chat

If the 850 hand-drawn emoji included in Hangouts aren't enough for you, we've got some good news -- there's a small collection of Easter Eggs that add even more whimsy to your discussions. The commands are mostly initiated with an IRC-like "/" followed by certain words. For example "/ponies" sends a colorful little filly prancing across your window. There's also "/ponystream" which overruns your chat with young horses. Of course, you can also punch in the Konami code (if you don't know what that is by now, there's no hope for you) which will change your background to pleasant drawing of a mountain and a tree. Sadly, that one is only visible to the person doing the typing. So far we're having mixed results with the web interface for Hangouts and the commands don't work on the mobile version. But in the Chrome app, everything is golden.

Not sure why Medicaid expansion matters? Try living without health ...

Clara Sanders-Stevens works hard every day, directing the Project 21 after-school program for the Oak Park School District. But, because she?s an independent contractor, she?s responsible for her own health insurance. And she just can?t afford it.

I don?t need help with food or rent, but I need health insurance ? especially in the event I have to go to the emergency room or I?m hospitalized. But when you start talking about $400 or $500 a month for insurance, it?s just not going to happen for a lot of people like me.

This is why Sanders-Stevens is a staunch advocate for Medicaid expansion in Michigan. She sees the realities of families living without health insurance every day. Kids coming to school sick because their parents can?t afford the cost of a doctor?s appointment or staying home from work and not getting paid. The same is true for a lot of other self-employed people she knows, or people who don?t get insurance through their work.

Those of us out here working, we?re trying to make good things happen. If people get sick they can?t go to work. And if we?re not healthy, there are no business owners to create new opportunities.

It?s especially frustrating to see this happening to Sanders-Stevens and others like her, who are dedicated to public service. As she explains, for many of them the choice may come down to having to return to the corporate world just to get health insurance instead of doing the kind of ground work that can make a real difference to communities.

Sanders-Stevens considers herself relatively lucky because she can usually afford to pay for routine check-ups. Having had health insurance in the past, she knows what a difference preventive care can make.

My health wouldn?t be what it is today if I hadn?t had all those regular physicals back when I had insurance. When you don?t have health insurance, it?s easy to let things go too far and wind up with something that could have been prevented.

Working with so many families who don?t have health insurance, Sanders-Stevens has seen what happens when people are hospitalized. She says they don?t always get the same care that people with insurance do or they?re released from the hospital sooner than they should be.

Then there?s the cost, she says.

You wind up with $20,000 in medical bills and they come after you for that immediately. They don?t let you work it out, or they want you to make payments of $700 or $800 a month. If people could afford that, they?d have health insurance.

Sanders-Stevens worries about what would happen if she were ever hospitalized. When they take the kids in her program skating, she doesn?t participate for fear of falling and getting hurt. In fact, she says she prays if she?s ever injured that she?s in her car at the time because her car insurance is the only medical coverage she has.

She plans to contact her representatives and urge them to support Medicaid expansion in Michigan. And what does Sanders-Stevens plan to say?

They don?t see how important it is until it happens to them or someone in their family. Our legislators have insurance. I?d never wish harm on anyone, but it just doesn?t hit home until it affects you directly. I see it every day and I can tell you that having health insurance would give so many of us peace of mind we don?t have now, knowing we can be cared for and stay healthy.

Contact your legislators today and tell them to say YES to Medicaid expansion.

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives on Android, headed exclusively to Nintendo on the console side

USSR and the USA. Batman and Joker. Christoph Waltz and... well, everyone. It's pretty tough to look at the world's best-known rivalries and exclude one of history's finest -- that being, of course, Sonic and Mario. The gritty battle between Nintendo and Sega gave fans on both sides plenty to converse about over the years, and one might say that the video game industry as a whole benefited from the back-and-forth. Now that Sega is a shell of its former self, though, the company's most iconic character is turning to its archrival in search of shelter. On the console side, Nintendo will be the exclusive home for Sonic games going forward, with the Wii U and 3DS set to become the homes for the next three titles -- details of which should be revealed "in the coming weeks."

Meanwhile, Android users will be pleased to know that Sonic the Hedgehog was released today in the Google Play store. It's available for $2.99, while iOS users are also being granted a free update to coincide.

Cameron tells EU rebels to back referendum law

    By Peter Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron ordered rebellious MPs on Thursday to back his plan for a law guaranteeing a vote on Britain's European Union membership as he sought shore up his party, his leadership and the coalition.

Conservative rebels have been pushing him to take a hard line on Europe, resurrecting party splits that contributed to the downfall of former prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major in the 1990s. An election is due in 2015.

Cameron's promise in January to claw back powers from the EU and then put Britain's membership of the bloc to a vote by 2017 failed to silence eurosceptics and halt the rise of the anti-EU UK Independence Party.

He bowed to pressure this week when he agreed to guarantee his pledge in law, despite opposition from pro-EU Liberal Democrats coalition partners whose leader warned it would be a "calamitous mistake" to leave Britain's biggest trading partner.

Liberal Democrat and Labour opposition and a lack of parliamentary debating time mean it may never become law, and any new law could be repealed by the next government.

Conservatives remain keen to debate the bill in parliament to show voters that they are serious about holding a referendum.

That has strained relations within the coalition and within the party. More than 100 Conservatives, a third of the total, criticised him in parliament on Wednesday over his stance.

Seeking to draw a line, Cameron said all Conservatives must support the referendum law in parliament. Party enforcers will impose a "three-line whip", their strictest order for MPs to back a vote or face disciplinary action.

The opposition Labour Party, which has a 10-point poll lead, said the Conservative party was in chaos, led by eurosceptic members who see the EU as a wasteful "superstate" that threatens Britain's sovereignty.

"This is a prime minister who has lost control of the agenda and lost control of his party," said Labour foreign affairs spokesman Douglas Alexander.

The referendum bill is not a government proposal because it is opposed by the Liberal Democrats. Instead, Conservative James Wharton will propose the bill in a personal capacity.

Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, said the government should focus on fixing the economy.

Tensions between EU nations in and outside the euro zone were highlighted on Thursday when French President Francois Hollande called for a euro zone economic government with its own budget, a harmonised tax system and a full-time president.

3-D modeling technology offers groundbreaking solution for engineers

May 16, 2013 ? Software developed at the University of Sheffield has the potential to enable engineers to make 'real world' safety assessments of structures and foundations with unprecedented ease.

Developed in the Department of Civil & Structural Engineering, the software can directly identify three-dimensional collapse mechanisms and provide information about margin of safety, vitally important to engineers.

A method of directly identifying two-dimensional collapse mechanisms was first developed in the Department in 2007, and commercialised through the spinout company LimitState Ltd. This method, for the first time, fully automated the hand calculation techniques that had been relied upon by engineers for decades. Software incorporating this method is now used in dozens of countries worldwide.

Now, in a study published by the Royal Society, the researchers have shown that the same basic approach can be applied to 3D problems, ensuring that real world features can be taken into account.

Professor Matthew Gilbert, who co-authored the study, says: "The software we have developed means that engineers should in future be able to model real world geometries much more easily than before, obviating the need to idealise a complex 3D problem as a much simpler 2D problem. This should lead to more reliable assessment of margin safety and, ultimately, save companies time and money on projects."

PFT: Kelly says Eagles QB job is open competition

    PollardGetty Images

Safety Bernard Pollard isn?t simply done talking about the Ravens.? He?s done talking to the Ravens.? Well, at least some of them.

Pollard tells 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore that he won?t be attending Baltimore?s post-Super Bowl visit to the White House.

?I?m not gonna be there,? Pollard said.? ?I gotta sit this one out, man.? I actually have a vacation with my family and then I?m coming back to get [my ring].? If I didn?t have a vacation, I wouldn?t come in anyway.?

    So what?s the problem?

?It?s not my teammates,? Pollard said.? ?It?s not my teammates at all.? I would celebrate with them any time, any day of the week I would celebrate with them.? But at the end of the day, I know what happened, I know what took place. . . . I?m sorry, I just don?t want to be in the room with certain people.?

Pollard didn?t name the ?certain people? with whom he doesn?t want to share space.? But he heaped praise on G.M. Ozzie Newsome and owner Steve Bisciotti, so it?s apparently not them.

?Ozzie is great,? Pollard said.? ?Ozzie is amazing.? I love Ozzie, man, he gave me an opportunity.? Mr.? Bisciotti.? It?s just one of those things where they made some moves, they cleaned house, Ozzie put together a really, really good defense as we see on paper right now.?

Pollard still seems to be particularly troubled by the situation that has been characterized in the media as ?practically a mutiny,? along with its potential link to his release.

?I?m just a player where you ask me my opinion, I?m gonna tell you,? Pollard said.? ?And for you to get upset or whatever afterwards, you know, you asked me.? That?s that. . . .? We were just asked our opinion about something.? And we let the coach know our opinion. . . .? It was us as players. . . .? We were asked, the floor was open.? And we responded, and let the coaches know how we felt, and that?s how it has to be as a football team.? We can?t walk around on eggshells as a football team.?

Though Pollard didn?t specifically mention coach John Harbaugh, it?s likely that he?s one of the people against whom Pollard holds a grudge.

Then again, Harbaugh and the Ravens ultimately may be in the right.? Pollard will never admit ? indeed, he may not even realize ? that he was out of line or over the top in anything he said or did while with the Ravens.? Still, Pollard has a reputation for being outspoken, for complaining, and for drawing too much attention to himself.

?Three teams in how many years,? one source said in the wake of Pollard?s release. ?Soon four.? What does that tell you??

The Ravens surely didn?t expect Pollard?s habit of complaining to suddenly change once he was released.? Still, if he can manage not to complain his way off the roster in Tennessee until 2014, it?ll be well worth the price of admission to see the Ravens and Titans get together in Baltimore.
