Rome not responsible for priests

22 August 2012

The US District Court in Portland, Oregon, has cleared the Vatican of any responsibility for a priest who was pronounced guilty of acts of paedophilia in Chicago and Portland during the 1960s.

Judge Michael Mosman ruled that the Holy See could not be considered an "employer" of the late Fr Andrew Ronan and consequently cannot be held responsible in civil proceedings for sexual abuse committed by priests.

Lawyer Jeff Anderson, who represents a number of sexual abuse victims, announced that there will be an appeal which the Holy See's lawyer, Jeffrey Lena, described as "very hard to win".

Anderson said he would appeal against the dismissal of the case on behalf of the now 60-year-old victim who brought the case.
