How to Find a Hairstylist or Makeup Artist For Your Wedding

Somewhere on your list of things to do before your wedding day is finding a hairstylist and makeup artist. It's likely that you have a hairstylist, but the same person who cuts your hair might not be a bridal updo expert. And makeup artists? Very few women have a pro in their list of contacts. And if your wedding is out of town, then that adds a whole other element of frustration. Simplify your search for a bridal beauty entourage with these tips:

  • Ask friends: While you're making the rounds this wedding season, ask the bride who did her hair and makeup. It's also a good idea to poll your married girlfriends for ideas too. Finally, the wedding coordinator is also a good resource for a list of professional hair and makeup artists in the area.
  • Search for salons: Quiz your regular stylist on his availability for your wedding day. Even if they aren't available for your wedding, he might know fellow stylists in the area who do similar services. You can also do a quick Internet search to find a salon that offers special bridal packages for hair and makeup.
  • Attend bridal shows: Wedding expos are the holy grail of information. You can find everything from your dress to a wedding planner at your local bridal show. It's also a great resource for finding a hairstylist or makeup artist in your area for the big day.
  • Scope department stores: Many makeup artists who work at your local beauty counter also do freelance work. If you find someone who does glowing, natural makeup well during a consultation, then ask for her card.

Once you have a list of potential wedding hairstylists and makeup artists, ask to see portfolios, and get references. Then, it's time to set up your bridal trial (warning: it might take more than one). Schedule the test run at least six months before your nuptials, so you have time to perfect your look or even find someone else. Also keep in mind that your team will likely have to do everyone in the bridal party, too. So, make sure you brief them on what you want for your bridesmaids, mother, and flower girls.
