Tunisian inflation holds near multi-year highs in June

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's annual inflation rate stayed close to multi-year highs in June, data showed on Monday, as prices of basic goods rose sharply.

Consumer price inflation was 6.4 percent, unchanged from April and May and just down from March's 6.5 percent, which was the highest rate in at least five years.

Food and drink prices rose 7.9 percent last month, while clothing and footwear gained 7.0 percent, the state statistics institute said.

As well as high inflation, the Tunisian economy is struggling with a big external deficit and an uncertain political outlook. It has also suffered because of the debt crisis in the euro zone, the main market for its exports and the source of most of its tourists.

The central bank is not aiming for a particular inflation rate but the most that should be tolerated is 5 percent, bank governor Chadli Ayari told Reuters last October.

The rate has not dropped below 5 percent this year.
